Vanderlande boosts presence in the Middle East with 101st site-based contract
Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina has chosen Vanderlande to be its preferred maintenance partner. The company’s 101st site-based contract is a five- year performance-based deal, which was agreed with the Tibah consortium (formed by TAV Airports, Al Rajhi Holding and Saudi Oger).
Medina is the second holy city of Islam, and attracts a large number of visitors every year. Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport will be one of the most advanced in the region, featuring the first sorter in Saudi Arabia. Vanderlande has delivered an innovative baggage handling system comprising of a HELIXORTER and Early Bag Storage systems, combined with its VIBES software, including SCADA and SAC.
Vanderlande’s site-based team will also take responsibility for maintaining several airport specific systems. In addition, the maintenance brief extends to spare parts and a separate Hajj arrival system.
This broad remit highlights the confidence and trust that Tibah has placed in Vanderlande. Vanderlande’s Managing Director Roland van den Bergh said: “By working with Tibah as an integral partner, we hope to be able to increase our scope and prove our added value in the years to come.”
The contract has increased Vanderlande’s service presence in the Middle East, alongside the Hajj Terminal at King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah, Salalah and Muscat airports in Oman, and Dubai Al Maktoum International Airport. “These partnerships will serve as a platform to showcase Vanderlande’s world-class baggage handling solutions to the Middle Eastern market,” added Roland van den Bergh.
Vanderlande forms strategic IT partnership with Stansted Airport
Vanderlande Industries UK Ltd (Vanderlande) has been awarded a long-term contract to provide strategic IT development and support at Stansted Airport by the Manchester Airport Group (M.A.G). The wholly owned subsidiary of the global market leader in baggage handling systems will design, build and implement a new high-level control system, and then manage the accompanying life-cycle support package until at least 2020.
The new system will be operational at Stansted Airport during the fourth quarter of 2015 and incorporate Vanderlande’s baggage sortation allocation computer (SAC) and intelligent supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software. It will control the operation at the core of a baggage handling system – to manage the way in which luggage is directed to the appropriate flight – as well as monitoring and reporting on the overall performance.
The integrated SAC and SCADA package was selected by MAG as the strongest technical solution for the specific requirements at Stansted Airport. It will include three modules from Vanderlande’s baggage execution software system VIBES – VIBES.SAC, VIBES.SCADA and VIBES.BPI (business process intelligence) – developed by the company’s 300-strong in-house software team. These have already been implemented at more than 50 airports worldwide, and provide a tried-and-tested solution to eliminate the need for any modifications after installation.
In addition to the supply of this intelligent software, Vanderlande will provide a minimum five-year life- cycle support programme for the baggage handling system. Stansted Airport will benefit from the company’s world-class 24/7 baggage IT-support service – provided by its global customer service centre – and flexible on-site support supplied by its mobile service team.
Stansted’s IT Project Manager Anthea Kubiczyn says: “We are delighted to announce this partnership with Vanderlande, which has a strong technical and commercial proposition to meet our current and future needs. Stansted is the third largest airport in London and currently the fastest growing major airport in the UK, serving more than 20 million passengers and over 200,000 tonnes of cargo a year, and we look forward to working with Vanderlande to support our future operational needs.”
Filipe Ferreira, Head of IT and Systems at Vanderlande in the UK adds: “We are very excited to be forging this long-term partnership with the Manchester Airport Group. It is an opportunity for us to prove once more that Vanderlande provides an exceptionally high level of service and a solution to manage Stansted’s baggage handling system at an elevated level of efficiency and transparency.”

Vanderlande wins 100th site-based service contractVanderlande has been awarded its 100th site-based service contract following an agreement with the Airlines Committee of Hawaii, Inc. (ACH). The three-year contract started on 1 March 2015 and involves a site-based team of more than 50 employees. They will provide operations and maintenance for all inbound/outbound baggage handling at Honolulu International Airport and Kahului Airport. The team will also be responsible for all maintenance of the inbound systems at Lihue Airport, Kona International Airport and Hilo International Airport.
Vanderlande was one of six potential bidders in the comprehensive and highly competitive procurement process with the ACH, which included blind scoring. Following this recent win, which reflects the company’s growth in services, Vanderlande now has 100 site-based service teams worldwide. The order intake for services will amount to a new record of 250 million euros in the current financial year, which ends on 31 March 2015. Over the last few years, Vanderlande has experienced a consistent growth in services sales of around 15% per annum.
To celebrate its 100th site-based service contract, an official ceremony was held in Hawaii. A commemorative plaque showing a map of the world was presented to ACH Co-Chairperson Matt Shelby by Tjarko Bouman, Director Services Development at Vanderlande.
“The ACH recently took responsibility for the operation and maintenance of baggage handling systems at certain major airports within the Hawaii airport system,” said Mr Shelby. “We knew of Vanderlande’s excellent global reputation within the market and we needed an industry leader to work closely with us for this important project. Although the procurement process was highly competitive with compelling proposals from multiple bidders, we are confident that we have found a real partner that can bring the operations and maintenance of the baggage handling system to a whole new level. The cooperation Vanderlande has shown on virtually every aspect of this start-up has been excellent and we are convinced that Vanderlande is the right partner for us.”
Mr Bouman commented: “We are very happy with our 100th site-based service contract, which we consider an important milestone in our services growth over the last few years. Our services for the ACH baggage handling systems will ensure high performance, and further improvement with the implementation of innovative service solutions such as EYE4U and Maximo® EAM. We look forward to working with the ACH to help them ensure the success of their business.”
Vanderlande’s STACK@EASE to be installed at Heathrow AirportVanderlande has been awarded a contract to supply and install 72 STACK@EASE units as part of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 3 integrated baggage (T3IB) system. This follows a recent successful test of the innovative product at terminals 3 and 5.
Developed by Vanderlande in 2013, the STACK@EASE is a highly flexible solution that takes the heavy lifting out of loading operations in baggage handling environments. It works intuitively as an extension of the handlers’ normal operations to minimise their physical workload. This helps to increase productivity and reduce the risk of manual handling injuries.
The STACK@EASE unit takes its power from any standard wall socket and has a compact design with a minimal footprint. This enables it to fit easily into baggage handling systems around the world with a minimum of disruption to existing layouts.
During the test, the STACK@EASE proved that it was capable of maintaining the required load rate and needed minimal intervention from the maintenance team. This was demonstrated to a number of VIPs – T3IB baggage stakeholders from Heathrow, Vanderlande and British Airways – at the test, in which 12 units were used to load a number of flights.
Cobalt Ground Services’ Baggage Training Duty Officer, Anand Sood, commented on his experience of using the STACK@EASE: “I didn’t really believe it at first, but the process was just as fast using the STACK@EASE as it was by manual loading – with so little effort. I could do my job in this way all day long. The movement I make with the STACK@EASE feels so natural that I don’t have to force it one way or the other, as it automatically gauges the weight of the load and counterbalances it.”
Director and General Manager of Vanderlande Industries UK Ltd, Nick Porter said: “We are delighted with Heathrow’s decision to install the STACK@EASE in T3IB. With its low environmental impact and simple operation, the unit has a minimal impact on the planet, while creating a better working environment for baggage handlers.”
Vanderlande updates Cardiff’s baggage handling system
A long term partnership that will see significant improvements to the baggage handling system at Cardiff Airport has been agreed between the airport and Vanderlande Industries UK Ltd, the UK subsidiary of the world’s leading baggage handling systems provider.
The five-year plan, designed by Vanderlande using its extensive experience in providing tailored baggage handling systems to airports of all sizes, comprises eight projects, including a renewal of the system’s parts that require replacement. Along with a belt replacement programme and a five-year maintenance contract that includes a spares consignment arrangement, the work will improve the reliability of Cardiff Airport’s baggage handling system and utilise its existing capabilities and capacities.
The maintenance deal will also help Cardiff Airport to achieve a more proactive approach to extend the life expectancy of the system.
Work is set to begin this winter with the installation of two make-up carousels, one of which will be installed to allow access for the HBS Standard 3 machine. This will be a fundamental step to prepare the airport for the upcoming project, which will involve installation and integration of a HBS standard 3 machine with the existing baggage system. Along with the maintenance contract, long-term partnership with Vanderlande will take the airport beyond HBS Standard 3 installation, for which legislation is coming into force in September 2018.
The work is being carried out in a live environment and shall consider minimising disruption to the airport operations and passenger experience. During this time and to aid in a smooth project delivery, Vanderlande will be working closely with Cardiff Airport providing support for contingency measures.
As Gary Mc William, Vanderlande’s head of UK business development, points out: “This new contract is further evidence of Vanderlande’s ability to work with airports of all sizes throughout the country to help make them ready for the future. We see this agreement with Cardiff Airport as an opportunity to expand our contribution to the overall improvement of UK regional airports and their passengers’ experience.”
Commenting on the partnership with Vanderlande, Debra Barber, Operations Director at Cardiff Airport, says: “Vanderlande was able to develop a proposal that specifically addressed our needs and goals over the next five years. It is also very important to us that Vanderlande is able to carry out all the projects in a live environment whilst minimising disruption to airport operations.”
Vanderlande has launched BAGMAPP, the new mobile baggage management application for all stakeholders in the end-to-end baggage handling, like airline and airport executives, but potentially also passengers. Vanderlande Industries and Type22 receive order for Scan&Fly Self Bag Drop trial at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport
Veghel - In January 2014 Vanderlande Industries France and Type22 in the Netherlands signed the contract for the delivery and installation of four Scan&Fly self bag drop units at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. The units are intended for a three month trial period and will be used by Air France passengers in Terminal 2E.
The order was received from Aéroports de Paris, who owns and operates three major airports in the Paris region (Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Paris-Orly and Paris-Le Bourget) and 10 general aviation airfields.
Aéroports de Paris chose Vanderlande and Type22’s solution for this trial because Scan&Fly offers many strong points: like its ability to switch between “agent operation by conventional desk” and “Self Bag Drop operation” and easy retrofit onto existing check-ins. It is also able to work in “One Stop” or “Two stop” mode within the same equipment.
The units will be retrofitted on existing check-in positions in the Departure Hall of Terminal 2E. For Aéroports de Paris and Air France the purpose of the test is to measure the reached capacity, and the overall performance of the Scan&Fly product. After installation of the four units it is expected that the trial will start in March 2014.
Type22 is Vanderlande’s preferred supplier for new and retrofit installations of the Self Bag Drop solution Scan&Fly, based on a hand-scanner. Vanderlande Industries has worked together with Type22 since 2009 and one of the earlier results of the cooperation is our product BAGCHECK, which has been installed in Terminal 5 and Terminal 3 of London Heathrow Airport. You can find more information about Scan&Fly and BAGCHECK on the Vanderlande website and see Scan&Fly in action on the Type22 stand no. 1608 at Passenger Terminal Expo in Barcelona, from 25-27th March 2014. Vanderlande will also be present at the exhibition on stand no. 1630.

BAGGAGE HANDLING CAPACITY RESTORED BY VANDERLANDE INDUSTRIES AFTER MASSIVE FIRE AT NAIROBI’S JOMO KENYATTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Veghel - On the 14th of September 2013 a new temporary international arrivals terminal for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi was opened and put into operation successfully. Vanderlande Industries was instrumental in getting the baggage system up and running again in a record time.
An unfortunate massive fire in Nairobi engulfed the existing arrivals hall at Kenya's main international airport on the 7th of August. Meanwhile a lot has been done to restore the airports capacity as quickly as possible. Research has shown that the international arrivals terminal, which was burnt, will have to be demolished as the structure is too weak, so alternative interim solutions have been developed to minimize interruption of the inbound passengers’ traffic. A new parking garage was converted to a temporary international arrivals hall in a record time of two weeks.
Vanderlande Industries had the privilege to deliver the temporary reclaim system, including three new arrivals carousels, which Vanderlande succeeded to deliver, install and commission in two weeks from contract award to operational use, an achievement greatly appreciated by the Kenyan Airports Authorities.
