CEM Systems provide Innovative Security Upgrade for London Gatwick Airport, UK

CEM AC2000 Airport access control and security management system upgraded to reflect latest technology innovations, including CEM’s new emerald access terminal

5th May, 2014 - CEM Systems, part of the Security Products business unit of Tyco, can today announce that its long standing customer London Gatwick Airport has undergone a major upgrade of its AC2000 access control and security management system. The project was phased throughout 2014 and involved an upgrade of AC2000 Airport software, as well as the upgrade of more than 700 card readers throughout the airport terminals to support PicoPass smart card technology.   CEM’s revolutionary intelligent access terminal, emerald, has also been installed at Gatwick Airport, providing a modern, innovative solution that goes beyond access control.

London Gatwick is the UK’s second largest airport, serving around 200 destinations in 90 countries, with more than 38 million passengers a year.

“Over the last year we have worked with CEM Systems to seamlessly upgrade our existing AC2000 security system, which has proven to be highly reliable and powerful.  As a large system with more than 80,000 card holders and due to the critical nature of the airport environment we needed a phased upgrade that ensured zero system downtime”, said David Rees, Business System Manager for Operations. “CEM support was second to none with the AC2000 Airport software upgrade performed remotely and quickly”.

“CEM Systems has been working in partnership with Gatwick Airport for over 25 years, during which time their AC2000 security management system has been continually upgraded and customized to meet their unique aviation requirements” saidPhilip Verner, Regional Sales Director, EMEA, CEM Systems.  “This recent upgrade was a significant project that required all existing CEM S610e card readers to be upgraded to support highly secure PicoPass smart card technology.  We are also delighted that our new CEM emerald IP access terminals have been installed to enhance operations at Gatwick Airport’s arrival gates and to act as an information point for ID staff and flight agents”.
The first of its kind in the industry, emerald is a touch screen reader, door controller, VoIP Intercom and system terminal all in a single box.  The innovative touch screen LCD greets cardholders by illuminating as they approach and provides a user friendly security experience.  As an intelligent multifunctional IP access terminal, emerald provides London Gatwick Airport with more than access control at the door.  Airport security can use remote apps on the terminal to update personnel records, perform reader maintenance and display airport adverts and messages.

Gatwick Airport are also using the unique emerald flight arrivals door mode, which enables flight arrival gates in both the North and South Terminal to intelligently route domestic and international passengers accordingly.  Upon a valid card swipe, flight agents intuitively select a predefined flight carrier number on the emerald terminal.  emerald then interlocks the appropriate doors to allow international passengers to be routed to passport and border controls, with domestic passengers simply routed to baggage collection.

With the major upgrade now complete, London Gatwick Airport has a truly innovative, future proof security platform that provides resilient access control, and improves card user experience at the door and enhances airport operations.

New Silesian Museum, Poland secured by the powerful CEM AC2000 Security Management System

Integrated access control system and biometric technology secure the new Polish museum

CEM Systems, part of the Security Products business unit of Tyco, today announced that they have secured the new Silesian Museum in Katowice, Southern Poland.  The AC2000 access control and security management system was delivered by CEM Approved Reseller Samaxon, and installed by IB Systems & Budimex.

The stunning new Silesian Museum houses 109,000 items from different fields of art, as well as archaeological, ethnographic and historical artefacts. The new museum building, opening mid 2015, has all of the Museum’s exhibition space buried underground with only glass tower skylight extensions visible above.

“As an organization with a large number of important works of art and other artefacts of historical importance, security is obviously of paramount importance for The Silesian Museum. CEM AC2000 access control system was chosen because of its proven security and reliability in addition to its flexibility to integrate to third party security systems” said Philip Verner, EMEA Sales Director, CEM Systems. “Integration is an important part of the Museums’ overall security strategy, requiring their existing intruder and CCTV security systems to work seamlessly with the access control system.”

CEM Systems worked together with Samaxon to develop a software interface between CEM AC2000 and Avigilon video management system and used the AC2000 Galaxy Dimension Interface to integrate with the Honeywell Galaxy intrusion detection system.

The AC2000 Galaxy interface enables inputs from intruder panels to be placed as icons on the AC2000 AED (Alarm Event Display) application allowing for central alarm monitoring of both access control and intruder alarms. AC2000 AED provides the Museum with a powerful security management tool and provides a central command and control user interface for the access control, video and intruder systems.  AC2000 AED also provides the Silesian Museum with dynamic, real-time information on all alarms and events that occur on the AC2000 system.

AC2000 comes with a range of comprehensive software applications that can enable the Silesian Museum to enhance business operations.  The Museum will utilize AC2000 VIPPS (Visual Imaging Pass Production) and AC2000 Visitors.  AC2000 VIPPS gives museum security personnel the ability to design and customize ID badges and AC2000 Visitors enables staff to monitor and control visitor access to the prestigious building.  Visitors can be given access levels and/ or traced, allowing visitor movements to be monitored and controlled.  Visitor cards can then be reused when returned, saving on visitor card costs.

The Silesian Museum has also installed CEM S610f integrated fingerprint card readers at high security doors throughout the building. This additional layer of biometric security allows for triple authentication — card, PIN and fingerprint — for highly restricted areas that require extra security.

Heathrow Airport Install emerald™ Intelligent Access Terminal

The industry’s most multi-functional touch screen access terminal deployed for controlling access to security critical areas throughout Heathrow airport

CEM Systems, part of the Security Products business unit of Tyco (NYSE: TYC) can today announce the industry renowned emerald™ multi-functional touch screen terminal has been installed in Heathrow Airport, UK.  As one of the world’s busiest airports, serving over 184 destinations across 80 countries, Heathrow Airport needed a reliable, innovative, intelligent device to ensure the highest levels of security as well as increasing operational efficiency.

Heathrow Airport, a long standing CEM customer, is using emerald to control critical paths and restricted zones that are permanently manned by security personnel.  emerald will provide security staff with a clear, visual, colour image indicating the card status i.e. access denied or access granted. emerald will also enhance security at Heathrow’s Campus area where all cargo, staff and crew are processed before gaining access to the airside area.  This is a critical part of Heathrow’s security operation where the highest level of security is required.

CEM Systems has been working with Heathrow Airport for over 20 years securing all five terminals with AC2000 Airport; CEM’s aviation specific access control and security management system.  AC2000 Airport provides Heathrow Airport with a flexible and customisable security solution to meet their unique and growing security requirements.

AC2000 Airport protects staff, aviation equipment such as air bridges and luggage carousels, and millions of passengers each year.  As well as utilising AC2000 software modules such as AC2000 AED (Alarm Event Display), AC2000 T&A (Time & Attendance) and AC2000 VIPPS (Visual Imaging Pass Production System) the airport also has over 4000 readers from the CEM S600 range and a number of S3030 portable readers for airport roaming security.

Adding to the existing range of hardware, emerald is now installed in the Heathrow ID centre and the Campus area.  “As an intelligent device emerald goes beyond securing premises; it empowers users, improves overall business needs and increases operational efficiency” said Andrew Fulton, Senior Director of Global Sales, CEM Systems.  He continued “emerald is truly revolutionising the security industry, providing a whole new access control experience”.

Featuring a touch screen reader and controller in one, and built in Voice over IP (VoIP) intercom functionality removing the need for an additional intercom system, emerald uniquely enables data normally only available on the CEM AC2000 access control client PC to be accessed locally and securely at the door through its range of Remote Applications. They display real time security information and statistics such as card status, scheduled visitors, top system alarms and most recent alarms on the terminal.  Additional applications include First and Last swipes that can be used for time and attendance purposes, Card Details for individuals to determine access levels and card expiry date, and Change PIN that allows users to proactively change their own PIN without contacting the system operator.  This data can only be accessed by those with the correct cardholder privileges.

emerald now has the ability to display rotating advertisements or information announcements. This feature can be used to display Health & Safety notices or company updates, as well as advertisements which businesses can use to assist in revenue generation.

Entry Checklist Mode enables emerald to display a sequence of images and questions relating to business requirements such as Security or Health & Safety, which users must answer positively before the door will open. If the employee answers No to any of the mandatory questions the door will not open.  This enables the business to enforce their Health & Safety Policy at the edge of their access control system.

CEM Systems and ADT Secure Inverness Airport

ADT Inverness installs CEM AC2000 AE (Airport Edition) to meet airport specific security requirements

Belfast, 19th November, 2013 - CEM Systems, part of the Security Products business unit of Tyco (NYSE: TYC), and ADT Fire & Security, Europe’s leading provider of physical security solutions, today announced that the CEM AC2000 AE (Airport Edition) security management system has been installed at Inverness Airport, Scotland to manage passengers and staff. AC2000 AE is the industry’s only airport specific access control system and is designed to monitor and manage access to the airport areas and services - helping to ensure the safety of staff and passengers alike.

With almost 615,000 passengers a year, Inverness Airport is the largest airport in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and is a key gateway for the north of Scotland. The airport’s route development and rise in passenger footfall have been catalysts to the airport’s overall growth year on year, and ADT has responded by installing the AC2000 AE system and CEM intelligent hardware to accommodate the expansion.

AC2000 AE encompasses powerful core access control features with a host of modules designed specifically for airports including check-in desk enabling, air-bridge monitoring, vehicle management, passenger reconciliation and much more. With a suite of powerful applications, and through seamless integration with other airport systems, CEM’s AC2000 AE system provides a fully integrated business solution designed to help airports run more efficiently.

“Developed by working in consultation with airports for over 25 years, CEM AC2000 AE is the leading choice for airports around the world,” said Philip Verner, Regional Sales Director, EMEA, CEM Systems. “CEM understands the dynamics of airports, and, using the AC2000 AE system in conjunction with CEM hardware, helps to provide Inverness Airport with the highest level of operational efficiency and security.”

Inverness Airport uses CEM innovative access control hardware which features an LCD to provide staff with instant feedback on the system including crucial cardholder information. The reader offers the highest level of reliability as it features an internal database for offline card validation. This means that should communication be temporarily lost with the host AC2000 server, airport staff can still validate cards using the card records stored in the reader’s internal memory, ensuring zero downtime at critical doors which is mandatory for Inverness Airport.

Inverness chose the CEM reader with DESFire smart card technology, one of the most secure card technologies available. The CEM DESFire card stores information securely on the card ensuring the card cannot be cloned and only valid staff cards are granted access. The CEM DESFire smart card delivers the perfect balance of speed, performance and cost efficiency.

Inverness Airport also uses CEM AC2000 VIPPS (Visual Imaging & Pass Production System) application. The VIPPS application gives the operator a range of video imaging facilities for capturing personnel details and images and incorporating these onto professionally designed ID passes. The VIPPS application allows ID unit administrators to create bespoke permanent or temporary printed ID passes that can be colour coded.

“ADT Inverness managed the installation of the CEM AC2000 AE system and CEM hardware solutions at Inverness Airport due to its comprehensive understanding of airport challenges and the security required to overcome them. By installing the only airport specific access control and security management solution on the market, we were able to meet the customer’s huge security requirements, delivering continuity of key systems, coupled with diligent authentication to airport services,” said Ian Hodgson, Regional Managing Director, Northern Region, ADT Fire & Security.

As Inverness Airport continues to grow, the CEM Systems solution can be easily developed and expanded to meet the airport’s evolving security needs.

Long-standing CEM customer successfully increased security with additional CEM portable access control readers throughout the airport

CEM Systems, part of Tyco Security Products, is pleased to announce that it worked together with long-standing customer Belfast International Airport to increase security during the G8 Summit.

Already having CEM S3020 portable access control readers on site as part of the existing CEM AC2000 access control system, the Airport chose to increase the number of portable readers to ensure maximum security throughout this busy time. CEM portable readers enable on-site airport security staff to validate access control cards at remote parts of the site or areas with no mains power supply, and they can also be used for random checks.

The G8 is made up of world leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the USA and the UK. The EU is represented by the President of the European Commission & the President of the European Council. The 2013 G8 Summit was held at Lough Erne Resort in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, on 17 and 18 June and resulted in a significant increase in visitor numbers to Northern Ireland. As Northern Ireland’s largest airport, it was imperative for Belfast International Airport that security was maintained at the highest standard.

“The time around the G8 was of great significance to Belfast International Airport. It was important that we provided the highest levels of security throughout the airport to ensure the safety of all our customers, and also that we kept disruption for travellers to a minimum. Installing additional CEM portable readers alongside our existing readers allowed us to do just this. The CEM portable readers were ideal in enabling us to conduct random security checks and to establish short term access check points in additional areas” said Suzanne Blair, Security Manager Belfast International Airport.

“CEM Systems access control software and hardware solutions have long been used by airports to ensure the highest levels of security. We are delighted to have worked closely with Belfast International Airport during this significant time to ensure that the highest levels of security were maintained for the Airport and for Northern Ireland” said Andrew Fulton, Senior Director of Global Sales, CEM Systems.
